Old guy new-media blues

By Steve Outing

So I’m the “doyen of online media columnists,” according to Guy Berger in his article, “It’s taken time, but finally the press ‘gets’ online,” for South Africa’s Mail & Guardian. Dictionary definition for doyen: “A man who is the eldest or senior member of a group.”

I don’t know whether to take that as some sort of compliment or merely a blunt indicator of advancing age. (Yeah, I’m closing in on 50.) Maybe that’s why thoughts of early retirement go through my brain periodically these days! :) )

And I notice from the picture accompanying Guy’s column that his hair is as gray as mine. Long live old new-media guys!

    Hello Steve

I closed 50 in July, but that don’t make me the “doyen” – there’s only one Outing! Thanks for all your inspiring work over the years.

    Cheers
